Buddhism and Shintoism?

I've been doing some research on early Shintoism and found that Shintoism (Japan's native religion) and Buddhism had some internal conflicts among the 2? Though they eventually began to co-exist within each other, what were these "internal conflicts" ? Please explain to me what the 2 were fighting about! Arigato gozaimasu! :D
